Skipping Through Children’s Lit. Land

Filed under: Books, In the News, Random Fun.The Simmons Children’s Literature Summer Institute is this weekend and I’m very excited to hear all the wonderful speakers they have lined up this year, including Natalie Babbitt, MT Anderson, and Kristin Cashore. Going to events like this is always inspiring and stimulating and just generally fun. I can’t wait to blog all about it next week.
In the meantime, here are a few interesting tidbits I’ve seen and heard recently. First, the controversial cover of Justine Larbalestier’s new book has been causing a stir every which way. I can’t say that I’m totally surprised that things like this happen in publishing, which I think just shows how the industry needs to change. Next, I was listening to an NPR piece on young adult books today and how they “help us grow up.” It gave YA a lot more credit than it usually receives in the adult world and they even had a call-in interview with Meg Cabot. And finally, I was amused (and a little disturbed) to discover that Twilight is now helping teens study for the SATs! I guess vampires really have taken over the world.
