Snapping Out of Revision Mode
Posted by annastan on July 22nd, 2009. Filed under: Writing Rants.I’ve noticed that when I work on revising for too long, it becomes increasingly more difficult to start something new. I think Revision Mode puts me into this nit picky state of mind where nothing seems right. This is, at least partially, the reason that I’ve started several projects in past months but haven’t been able to actually complete a first draft.
Last time I was in this situation, National Novel Writing Month happened to be just around the corner and I took full advantage of it. I’d never written so much so quickly before and it felt wonderful to just keep rushing along until the first draft was done. Alas, NaNoWriMo is still a few months away, so in order to snap out of my funk, I think I’ll have to try some self-discipline and create a similar goal for myself.
Luckily, I just discovered this handy Word Meter that you can post anywhere. I’m planning on using it for a little bit of encouragement so don’t be surprised if you see it pop up on this blog when I post about my work-in-progress. What might that be? Well, I have some options. In my non-focused state I’ve managed to start a few different things, all vaguely paranormal in nature. I think the choice has been narrowed down to one YA story that I will simply code name Lightning for now. I hope to have more to report on it soon…
