WIP Update

As alluded to in a previous post, I’ve been working on a new YA project, code name Lightning. So far it’s been slow going, especially since the story is set in an alternate reality. This means that it requires some research on my part and a whole lot of brainstorming. “If this incident in history happened differently, what else would be different?” I have to ask myself. This kind of thinking makes my brain hurt, but it’s fascinating to think of the possibilities. It also explains why my word count has been at a plateau for the past week or so.

In an effort to power through (more research can always be done after the first draft is complete) I’m going to set a writing goal for myself. Ready? Here it is: By the end of August, I hope to have a 50,000 word completed first draft. I’ll be using a handy dandy word meter to chart my progress. Shall we put my current word count on the board?

6242 / 50000 words. 12% done!

Well, it’s a start. I’ll be checking back in periodically to report on my progress. In other progress news, I’ve managed to do quite a bit of reading recently. Here are some titles worth mentioning.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan – A creepy tale set in a fascinating world. I was completely sucked in by the story, but luckily not too scared of the content (though I recommend only reading it during the day).

Prada and Prejudice by Mandy Hubbard – Such a fun read! The main character is a completely believable teenager so I was willing to follow her anywhere, even back in time to 1815.

Jumping Off Swings by Jo Knowles – Now I may be a tad biased because Jo is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, but I loved this book. The writing was just lovely and the story pulled me in, held me there, and even made me cry.

There’s nothing like reading some good books to inspire you to want to write a good one yourself!
