It’s Work-In-Progress Wednesday and I’m happy to report that I’ve actually made some progress! After hitting a bit of a wall with my latest project (code name Lightning) I went back and looked over my writing group’s suggestions and managed to get things rolling again. I did have to take out a few chapters, which set me way back on my word count, but I think the story is much stronger now. I also decided to go through and change some of the family dynamics around because I realized that they were too similar to those in one of my other books.
Because of the scorching heat we’ve been having the past few days, I actually had a bit of a change in my writing routine. Usually I write in my office or in the dining room on my husband’s laptop while he’s at work. But it was so unbelievably hot today that I packed up my gear and headed to Panera instead where I knew nice, frosty air-conditioning was waiting.
Very often I have a hard time writing in places like Panera because I get too distracted with all the good people-watching. But today I managed to actually focus (the cool air seemed to wake up my brain) and I managed to get quite a bit done. So, while I’m far behind the pace I’d originally set out for myself, I’m still happy to see that I’ve made some progress with my word count:
11947 / 50000 words. 24% done!
I can only hope my productivity continues, even if I won’t get the first draft completed by the end of the month as planned.

I find when I first head to a new place to write, I can tune out almost anything. But the place gets stale in about four days and I need to find somewhere new. Or maybe I need better focus
That’s interesting that you almost grow immune to a place after a while. If this heat wave continues, I’ll probably be forced to test that theory out!
Hi Anna!
What a coincidence! I wrote at Panera this week but I had to go back to my car and get a sweater but it was TOO cold, LOL.
I’m trying to finish up a first draft as well. My goal is to be done by August 31st so I can start revisions.
Good luck on your WIP.
P.S. Your other novels sound very interesting!
Hi Karen! My Panera was freezing too – I wound up wrapping myself in a shawl (which made people look at me funny since it was 90 degrees outside). Good luck with your WIP. My goal was also Aug 31st for the first draft, but it’s not looking like that will happen. Happy writing!
