A Slice of Pie Night

As I mentioned yesterday, last night was the Boston area’s first Kid Lit Pie Night. I was expecting it to be a pretty low-key affair, but we wound up absolutely packing the place! There was a wide range of people there: writers, editors, agents, illustrators, teachers, librarians, and general children’s book enthusiasts. I found myself chatting about everything from baseball books to middle grade vocabulary. It was wonderful to be surrounded by so many friendly and like-minded souls.

What I especially appreciated about the evening was that it didn’t have the kind of schmoozy atmosphere you might expect from such an event. People weren’t there only to promote themselves or with the sole purpose of making connections; they were there to talk about what they love. It made the night relaxed and fun, a perfect place for a naturally shy person like myself.

Now, I know what you really want to hear about: the pie. While the chocolate fudge pie looked tempting, I went with the mac & cheese pie for a dinner-and-pie-in-one option. It was a pretty good choice, though I think I might have to sneak back to the Pie Bakery and Cafe another time to sample some of their other treats.

Anna– I was so bummed to have missed it, I had trouble finding a sitter at the last minute. I told my crit partner, and he went, and said it was great. Hope our paths cross again sometime.

Hi Heather! I’m sorry you couldn’t make it. I believe the plan is to have another one in November, so hopefully our paths will cross then!

Ohhhh… sounds like such a wonderful event (and the pie sounds really yummy!). Who or what organization was behind organizing it?

Hi Anne! The event wasn’t put together by any actual organization, I don’t think. It was the work of Mitali Perkins, Anindita Basu Sempere, Melissa Stewart, and John L. Bell (apparently all via Twitter). It was their answer to the NYC Kid Lit Drink Night that’s been ongoing for a while.

    Hi Anna,
I really enjoyed it as well. We didn’t get to talk, but I think I have a picture of you from pie night. Check it out on twitter (it has a #boskidlit tag) or on my blog. Next time I’ll try to be less shy and say hello!
