Apples, Chosen Ones, Wild Things, and Pooh

Yesterday was absolutely perfect weather here in Massachusetts and a lovely day to go apple picking. After some careful tree-combing, we came home with two bags of delicious apples. Now we have to figure out what to do with them all. If you have any favorite apple recipes, I’d love to hear them!

To start off the week, here are some interesting internet tidbits:

  1. My first ever “Topic of the Week” post for The Enchanted Inkpot on the role of “The Chosen One” in fantasy. Please stop by and comment!
  2. Boston.com discusses the latest batch of children’s book film adaptations, including Where the Wild Things Are.
  3. NPR reports on the newest installment in the Winnie-the-Pooh series: sacrilege or welcome addition?
  4. And finally, if you’re having trouble coming up with a fantasy plot, try out the hilarious Genre-Fiction Generator.

Happy Monday!

  • Anna, our apples are out here in Connecticut, too. I love making an apple crisp instead of a pie. It’s easy and it’s quick. I use about 8 to 10 apples for this. Toss the peeled and sliced apples with 1/4c. sugar and 1/4c. brown sugar, plus cinnamon, clove, and ground ginger. Make the crisp with one stick of unsalted butter, 1/4c. sugar, 1/4c. brown sugar, and 3/4c. flour. Cut with two knives (or your hands) until it’s crumbly to your liking (I go for pea-sized). Sprinkle the topping on the apples and bake at 375 for around 45 min–or until brown and bubbly. When it’s warm, serve. (After you’ve made it once, you can adjust the sugar to your liking. I tend to use less–just the brown sugar packed well.) If you add a scoop of ice cream on top of it, it’s heaven. We love it!

  • Since you ask … the coolest apple recipes I’ve seen in a while are at Jama Rattigan’s blog!! Off to The Enchanted Inkpot to read your post!
