World-Building Through Character

Posted by annastan on February 16th, 2010. Filed under: Craft, Guest Post.

Even though today is a non-blogging day, I just wanted to pop in to let you know that my lovely author friend Alisa Libby had me do a guest post on world-building in fantasy today. After some pondering, I realized that I often think of world-building as being rooted in character. Once I had that figured out, it was an interesting post to write. Please stop by and share your thoughts!

Great guest post, Anna. I love the concept of a story being the blend of character and place. This makes the story more powerful, I think. And, of course, this could be utilized in non-fantasy books, as well.

You’re welcome, Jon! Thanks for the thoughtful comment on the post. I’m glad it inspired you to try a bit of world-building of your own!

Thanks, Andrea! I think you’re right that pretty much all of the ideas can be applied to any type of writing, not just fantasy.

    Anna,

Thanks for sharing. I don’t write fantasy, but I am very interested in what it takes to write a good one. I will share your information and site with my blog visitors.

Thanks, Kathy! Really, I think the fundamentals of world-building can be applied to any kind of fiction; they’re just easier to pick out in fantasy. Happy writing!
