One Conference, Two Books, and Four Writing Links

Posted by annastan on May 12th, 2010. Filed under: Contests, Links.

I’m buried in grading final papers right now, so this is going to be a quick post. I did have a few things I wanted to share with you all.

1. I’m going to NESCBWI this weekend! I was on the waiting list, but I got an email yesterday telling me that I’m in. If you’re going to be there, let me know and I’ll keep an eye out for you.

2. I won a blog contest! I hardly ever win anything, so I was shocked when I found out I’d won two books, courtesy of Tricia. I had a few to choose from, but these are the ones I picked:

eyes like stars

the dead and the gone

Thanks, Tricia!!

3. I’m sure you’ve noticed that I like to bookmark useful writing links. Here are some great ones I came across recently:

-How to Craft a Great Voice from Nathan Bransford

-How Many Subplots is Too Many? by James Scott Bell at The Kill Zone

-Is Your Character Novel-Worthy? from Adventures in Children’s Publishing

-Crafting an Elevator Pitch from Michael Sterns

Happy Wednesday!

  2. Terry Lynn Johnson

oh, have fun at the conference! I’ve just come back, but already want to go to another one with you!
Congrats – those look like awesome books.

  3. Andrea Vlahakis

Congratulations on winning the blog contest! Have fun at the conference!

  4. annastan

Jon, Heather and I are carpooling to the conference, so I’ll make sure to pretend she’s you the whole way there. That won’t be weird…

Terry, I haven’t been to a conference in years, so I’m looking forward to it!

Thanks, Andrea! I’ll try to remember to bring my camera so I can post lots of pictures next week.

  5. Laura Pauling

Hey Anna – I’m meeting up with Heather Saturday morning! Maybe I’ll see you there. Only a couple days away.

And I almost fell over dead when i won 2 book giveaways from Spread the awesome, b/c I hardly ever win those dang contests either!

  6. Adventures in Children's Publishing

Oh, my gosh. Thank you so much for including our link! We already tagged the other three posts to put into our This Week for Writers segment for this coming Friday, so we’re beyond flattered to be included with them.

Congrats on the blog contest win — I loved the dead & the gone! And have a wonderful time at SCBWI.

  7. Kris

Hey Anna – I’ll be at NESCBWI also! I’ll probably be w/ Laura! So, we’ll def keep an eye for you and Heather!

  8. Pat/Tricia J. O'Brien

That’s so exciting that you got into the conference at the last minute. It gives it an extra rush, I think. Have fun. And thanks for linking me on the win–that was sweet of you!

  9. Lydia K

Congrats on winning those books! I have yet to go to a conference yet, so I’m jealous!

  10. annastan

Laura, Heather and I will be driving up together, so we’ll definitely get to see each other. Yay! And congrats on winning those two books – we both need more books, don’t we? :-)

Adventures, I was happy to link to your post – it was great stuff! Keep up the good work!

Kris, I’m so excited to meet you and Laura! Maybe I should wear the same shirt I have on in my photo. :-)

Tricia, getting in at the last minute does make it more exciting. I had started to think I wouldn’t be able to go, so finding out I could was definitely a rush.

Lydia, I’ll make sure to blog all about it so you can feel like you were there too!

  11. Laura Marcella

Thanks for the great links. Have fun at your conference!

  12. angela

Congrats! And have a ton of fun at the conference!

  13. Jonathon Arntson

Anna, I have a solution. How about you pretend Heather has a bug planted on her and I can hear everything you say! Less weird, right?

  14. Karen

Have fun at the conference! I LOVE conferences! :)

Let me know what you think about EYES LIKE STARS. I’ve had my eye on that one for awhile. And you’ll love the other one! Very good.

  15. annastan

Thanks, Laura and Angela! I’ll make sure to post pictures of the conference next week.

Jon, that could work. Heather might wonder why I keep talking really loudly, but she’ll get over it.

Karen, I’ll make sure to report back after I’ve read Eyes Like Stars. I’m exited to read the Pfeffer book (though I’m afraid I’ll start hoarding canned goods again…)

  16. Jonathon Arntson

Yes, that’ll work really well. Now I just have to get the bug from Michigan to Mass…I could herald an owl…

  17. Lisa G.

See? More books for me to add to my own list. They look so good! Congrats and thanks for the links!

  18. annastan

Jon, I think an owl should be able to make it here by Saturday. Especially if it’s a magical owl.

Sorry, Lisa! I don’t want to be the one responsible for your reading list exploding. I’ve heard great things about both books, though.

  19. Nandini

I’ll look for you and Heather!! Wish I could have carpooled with you guys but I’m on transport duty. Can’t believe it’s this weekend!

  20. annastan

It’ll be great to see you again, Nandini! We’ll have to remember to take lots of pictures.

  21. Heather Kelly

It is so funny to finally arrive to read this post, and having my name mentioned in the comments so much. ROFL! I can’t wait to see EVERYONE in the flesh! Which is not at all redundant, since normally I see you all cyberically. <-not a word, I know. Cyberonically? Cyberishiously? YAY NESCBWI!
