A couple years ago, the wonderful YA author Jo Knowles was kind enough to Skype with one of my writing classes and share some advice. She had lots of great tips, and among them was one that I keep coming back to:
Always make writing the top priority in your life even if that means other things have to slide.
I’ve found myself thinking about this advice the past couples weeks as I’ve been consumed with pre-semester prep, technology issues, and family engagements. Of course other things in life have to take over sometimes, but that doesn’t mean I’m allowed to abandon my writing. I need to stay connected to it in some way.
So I’ve been trying to work my way back into it. I jotted down some notes on the train ride home last night. I typed them up and expanded on them this morning. Right now, writing still feels secondary compared to everything else that needs my attention, but I’m going to keep clawing my way through it and trying to push writing to the forefront again.
How do you keep writing at the top of your priority list?
